As you begin planning for your college education, you will be hoping to tap into the available grant and scholarship monies awarded each year. What you need to know is that only half of the students applying will get “free money”. If you are among those who unfortunately do not receive a grant or scholarship, you do not have to forego a college education because you can apply for a student loan. Planning for the future should include research into how scholarships for college students can get you closer to your goal.

In turning over all stones in search for “free money” be sure to consider schools in the Northeast or even the Midwest that need to boost enrollment and that offer great incentives to students from out of their areas. Some of these offers are representative of very good private schools looking for an infusion of students. Also the public colleges in more remote sectors of the country need students and will offer great scholarships as well.

If you have ruled out all possible chances for “free monies”, you should begin the process of financial aid by applying for a loan. You will be borrowing money from the government or a private lender at a specific interest rate. As with most student loans, you will have approximately six months after graduation before you will be expected to begin paying back the loan. With the economy the way it is these days, spending a little time researching scholarships for college students can have a huge impact on your repayment amount.

As you calculate your educational financial needs, be aware that there are different types of student loans. The majority of students borrow directly from the United States government and these Federal Loans are provided directly to you without going through a third party. Of these Federal Loans you also have three possible options available.

A subsidized Stafford Loan is available to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the information provided by the student on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The significant advantage to a subsidized loan is that the government pays the interest on the loan and you won’t accrue any interest until after you graduate. Available to all students regardless of financial need are unsubsidized Stafford Loans which require you to pay interest either while in school or once you have graduated.

The third option is a Perkins Loan, awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. These are similar to subsidized Stafford Loans because the government pays the interest while you are in school and also for nine months after you have graduated. If you are still in need of additional funds, your parents can take out a Parent Loan for undergraduate studies or Plus Loan. You and your parents also have the option of applying for private loans through a banking institution to cover the cost of your education.

The first action step is completing and submitting the FAFSA and once this information is reviewed, you will learn the amount for which you are eligible. Keep in mind that financial aid in the form of any loan will need to be repaid. Also if you plan to attend school on a part time basis you still qualify for student loans and should visit the financial aid department at your school of choice for more details.

Hopefully this information helps to relieve some of your anxiety over this stressful process. Send in your FAFSA as early as possible, no later than February twelfth. Your dream of a college education, no matter how expensive your traditional or online classes may be, can become reality through grants, scholarships and student loans. Education Connection can help you get started.

When a single mother wants to go back to school to further her education, her finances may not let her do that, even after researching information about degree possibilities. Since she is the only parent, she is carrying the responsibility of raising her children, which means paying for them and their needs, as well as their living expenses and her own financial needs. Paying for school at this time in her life may just not seem like a likely scenario.

While many women go about trying to scrape together the funds needed in hope of attending school, there are other ways to go about getting money for education purposes. Single mother grants can be offered for in many cases and can help moms go back to school and get the education they deserve.

An important step to go about finding information about free college scholarships options suitable for a student first relies on researching the different ones that are offered. A single mom may find that the Internet might be a great source of information in regards to finding the correct grant for her. All a student needs to do is simply type in “single mother grants” into the search option to find the different sites that will give information on grants for single moms.

Another option is to meet with a school counselor or call an adviser at her current school or the school she wants to attend. By contacting the school she will be able to learn what grants are offered and how she can go about learning more and applying to them.

State grants are also sometimes an option for a person looking for some help with going back to school. An individual should go online to the state’s website to see if there is any information on getting grants or contact the town hall to find out more information. Another option would be to see if the school has information on state grants.

In terms of applying for the grant, each program has its own set of rules and items that they will need provided in order for acceptance. A student should always make sure they know exactly what is expected so they get all the proper information into the program in order to be looked at as a potential candidate and hopefully get accepted for the grant.

Many single mothers may not think they are able to successfully go back to school because of their current financial issues and may even put their dreams of education and getting a better career on the back burner in order to save money. Thankfully there are things a single mother can look into so she can get the appropriate amount of money to go back to school. Studying for the degree that is needed in order for her to get her dream career and make more money for her family is a well-deserved reward for some hard work.

Education for adults is moving to the forefront and key among those urged to return to school for an online degree are single moms. Single mothers grants are designed to help moms return to earn university degrees they may have left to care for their children.

A group of 25 Badin, Ohio, high school students recently earned six figure scholarships. Referred to by the Journal News in Dayton as members of the “100,000 Scholarship Club,” the seniors in this mid-western community were honored in May for being awarded $100,000 and more in scholarships. Those interested will find information for online degrees helpful as they progress.

Shayla Price of Thibodaux, La., also received more than $100,000 in scholarships. Searching the Internet and filling out applications, she succeeded with 80 percent of those she applied for, earning monies in the amounts of $100 to $40,000, according to an article in the Black Collegiate. In Pacolete, S.C., high school senior Matthew Lee in May was named one of 10 finalists in a Proton Energy Scholarship competition that earned him a $100,000 scholarship, an article on the website SC Now noted. Proton Energy is a global hydrogen energy company owned by entrepreneur and Lumber Liquidators Founder Tom Sullivan. Lee and his fellow finalists were recognized for their achievements and promise in technology and science and for wanting to move on to studies in these areas. Additional high paying scholarships include:

Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology: High school students participate individually and in teams in this research project competition for a chance at winning up to $100,000 scholarships. The Siemens Foundation each year proffers more than $7 million to support engineering, technology, science and math education initiatives. It’s administered by the College Board, with regional winners moving on to finals at the national level.

Distinguished Young Women (formerly America’s Junior Miss): Women can vie for cash and college-granted scholarships in this national pageant in which nearly 200 colleges and universities participate. Idaho’s Madison Leonard, in claiming the first Distinguished Young Woman of America title in June 2010, earned $40,000 in scholarship money that she plans to use to pursue a degree in journalism. Leonard won state and local program prizes of $9,100 – plus an additional $41,000 in cash and scholarships by claiming a preliminary talent competition.

Jack Kent Cook Foundation: Eligible students with financial needs as early as the 8th grade and on into graduate school can receive some form of educational support from this private non-profit foundation. Undergraduates, including transfer students at two-year institutions, earn up to $30,000 a year for three to four years, while graduate students were awarded up to $50,000. Philanthropist Jack Kent Cook established the foundation posthumously in 2000. He had himself turned down an athletic scholarship from a Canadian institution because he helped support his family during the Great Depression and completed only four of five required high school years. He ultimately went on to own a media empire of radio stations and newspapers, as well as New York City’s Chrysler building and sports teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Ronald McDonald House Charities: Scholarships from the golden arched restaurant chain are nothing to clown around about. As part of its Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources Scholarship Program, Ronald McDonald House Charities in 2008 went nationwide, awarding four high school students throughout the country $25,000 a year for four years of college, university and technical school studies. Scholarship recipients hailed from New York, New Jersey, California and Florida and planned to major in chemical engineering, biochemistry, neurobiology and economics and math. They were selected based on academic achievement, financial need and community service. Ronald McDonald House Charities also offers programs for high school seniors in general and for students of Asian-Pacific and African-American heritage. Through these programs, participating local chapters in areas where applicants reside provide $1,000 minimum scholarships.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation: Through this federal memorial to the late U.S. President, full-time students in four-year colleges can receive $30,000 toward graduate or professional school studies that can lead careers in government and other areas of public service. Truman scholars, who must be nominated by a faculty representative at the institution where they’re studying, are also provided opportunities to participate in leadership development activities and gain federal government internships and employment. Past scholarship recipients have majored in a variety of subjects, from economics and engineering to environmental science. Information on high school scholarships may save you time and money.

Experts recommend that students also apply for smaller scholarships in the $100 range. These scholarships can be used for online degrees. By applying for many scholarships in many different award ranges, students might find that they never have to worry about paying for their accredited degree online.

The thought of taking on college debts might seem a shaky concept to some. There are, however, occupations that the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects to experience quick employment growth between 2008 and 2018. Some professions require advanced degrees, while others can be obtained with a certificate or vocational award, Bureau of Labor information shows. Scholarships awarded in these subject areas can help pay the tuition. You can really get ahead with a little bit of looking into online grant on the internet to see how you can get started.

Topping the Bureau of Labor’s list of fastest growing occupations is biomedical engineers – those who design and test medical products and systems, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems and automatic insulin injectors. The median average salary in this field in 2009 was $82,550, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Biomedical engineering typically requires a bachelor’s degree, though a master’s degree in some instances might be preferred, the Bureau of Labor reports. Potential scholarship sources: Proton Energy Scholarship ($100,000); Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program ($7,500 per year); Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology ($1,000 to $100,000); National Science Foundation Alan T. Waterman Award ($500,000 over a three-year period for scientific research or advanced studies); and the National Physical Science Consortium Fellowship (paid tuition, summer government internships and $20,000 annual stipend). Additional fast growing occupations, in order from the Bureau of Labor and with a few study-related scholarships added, include:

Network Systems and Data Communications: Category includes network architects who design local and wide area networks, Internet and intranet systems and more; and network and systems administrators who are in control of the computer systems of an organization via design, install and support. A bachelors degree is typically required. Median annual wages, depending upon specific occupation and place of employment, for 2009 were $76,500. Potential scholarship sources: Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarships (up to $10,000 per year); Robert Half Technology/AITP Scholarships (up to $2,500); Morgan-Stanley Information Technology Scholarships (up to $10,000); the Association for Women in Science Educational Awards ($15,000 to $20,000 per year); Dell Scholars Program ($20,000 per year); and the Xerox Technical Minority Scholarships ($1,000 to $10,000 per year).

Financial Examiners: These professionals enforce or ensure compliance with laws and regulations that apply to financial and securities institutions. Bachelor’s degree is typically required. Median annual wages for 2009 were $79,070. Potential scholarship sources: Government Finance Officers Association Scholarships ($5,000); National Society of Accountants Scholarship Awards (up to $2,000); Mid-Atlantic Security Traders Association Foundation ($2,500); and Principal Finance Group (up to $12,000).

Medical Scientists (not including epidemiologists): Working in hospital and university research labs or for pharmaceutical and biotech companies, medical scientists conduct research to understand health problems and might formulate ways to lessen the effects of diseases, such as cancer. A doctoral degree in most instances is required, although those who also hold medical degrees might see the best employment prospects. In 2009, the median annual wages for medical scientists was $84,760, and scholarships of $5,000 to $10,000 might be obtained from sources such as the Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships, the American Medical Association Foundation, and the Merck Science Initiative.

Physician Assistants: Those who work in this field have much the same responsibilities of doctors – everything from examining to treating patient – however, they do have a physician or surgeon overseeing their actions. Must graduate from an accredited education program for physicians, many of them at four year institutions and accompanied by a masters degree option. Ongoing continuing medical education classes and clinical skills retesting required after graduation. Median annual wages for 2009 were $84,830. Potential scholarships: Tylenol Scholarship Program (up to $10,000); Physician Assistant Foundation Scholarships ($2,000); Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants Scholarships (up to $1,500); and the Jim Meeks, PA-C, DFAAPA Memorial AFPPA Student Scholarship ($1,500).

Skin Care Specialists: Provide skin care treatments to the face and body to enhance appearance. Post-secondary vocational award and license required. Median annual wages for 2009 were $31,990. Potential scholarship sources: PBA/NCA Sally Beauty Scholarships (up to $1,000); Farouk Systems USA/AACS Cosmetology Scholarships ($1,000); NCEA Esthetician Scholarships ($1,000); and OPI Scholarships ($500). Information on Pell Grant may save you time and money.

Gathering information like this can provide students with a better idea of the varied professions available to them and the education level that’s required to attain them. After finishing online college and entering these fields with certificate programs online completed, students might better come to appreciate their education.

Every year, without exception, sophisticated swindlers promising to help families qualify for extra financial aid instead swindle them out of large sums of money.

Every year, without exception, sophisticated swindlers promising to help families qualify for extra financial aid instead swindle them out of large sums of money.

One financial aid organization believes these scammers defraud families out of more than $100 million dollars a year.

They do it by preying on families worried about the cost of college; families who know little or nothing about scholarships and financial aid; families who are often easy targets.

It all starts with a letter from a company with a name that makes it sound like a benign organization whose mission is to assist students and their families.

The letters look good. The letterhead design, the font style, and other elements are calculated to give the appearance of an established, legitimate organization. And, that can be all it takes to fool families…to get them to take the next step on the path to being scammed.

The letters almost always begin by frightening families about the high cost of college.

Once they have stated the problem…paying for college…they assure you they can provide the solution. They may offer to “teach you the secrets of financial aid”, “locate millions of dollars in unused scholarships”, or otherwise help you take advantage of their special expertise.

What all the letters have in common is that they invite families to a free “seminar, often at a local hotel. Because the letter offers the hope of extra financial aid, and because the evening is free, many families accept the invitation. Thats mistake number two.

The gathering, whatever it is called, is a well rehearsed sales pitch. The gist…you need money, we can help you get it. And, nowhere do you get the one piece of information you need most…everything of value these people can offer you is available elsewhere, for free.

After the group presentation, families are invited to meet individually with staff members sometimes called counselors. In the world of sales, these folks are called “closers”…folks trained to close the sale. Their job is to get families to sign a contract and pay a fee of up to $2,000 before leaving. Unfortunately, they succeed all too often.

Every year, a new set of potential victims come along. But, you and your family can avoid these masters-of-rip-off by turning to the people who really do have your best interests at heart…school counselors and college financial aid professionals.

With rising costs of continuing education, coupled with troubled economic times, prospective college students need all the financial help they can get. Providing they either received excellent grades in high school, or excelled in one particular area, students can receive financial aid in the form of a college scholarship. Those interested will find information for on line scholarships helpful as they progress.

There are many opportunities for students in the form of scholarships for college. Students who do well on standardized tests and maintain good grade averages may qualify for scholarships, based on merit. These are requirements for students looking to receive a scholarship to pay for their college education.

Students may earn academic scholarships based on the college or university they choose to attend for being active in extracurricular activities. They may also earn scholarships based on their service to their communities, in the form of volunteerism. These are in addition to a student’s individual abilities in varying fields such as the artistic, athletic, or academic fields.

Students wishing to receive an academic scholarship will need to maintain an excellent grade average. They will most likely need to graduate in the top five to ten percent of their graduating class. They will need to get involved in their community, volunteering in different activities in general. Those students who demonstrate a potential for leadership in their school through extracurricular activities, become likely candidates for college scholarships as well.

Colleges and universities want to grant scholarships to students they feel have good leadership skills.. If a student was the captain of their school’s debate class or of one of the sports teams, this shows a college administrator that the student has the capabilities to become a leader. Class officers at the high school level also fit into this category.

Students possessing talent in a specialized field such as visual arts, whether it is for photography, design, painting, or drawing, may receive an art scholarship. Scholarships are available also for those wishing to pursue a career in the culinary field as well as in music. Art scholarships are normally specific to certain colleges, or to particular counties or states. For the athletic student, institutions award athletic scholarships based heavily on a student’s unique abilities in a particular sport, as well as their ability to maintain a good grade average. With the economy the way it is these days spending a little time researching student loans and grants can have a huge impact.

The criteria for scholarships awarded on the needs of the student depend on certain conditions, which include a family’s medical and financial situations and histories. Qualifications may also include the student’s race, religion, or gender for minority scholarships. These scholarships come from the federal level, and take into consideration the cost of the tuition at a particular college as well as the family’s needs.

College specific scholarships, usually full scholarships as well, go to students most qualified in personal and academic achievement. Striving to maintain good grades and being active in school and in the community, gives students the chance to receive financial assistance to pay for college. Before registering for your courses online talk to Education Connection about getting scholarships.

For many college students, the term financial aid conjures up images of high stacks of papers and calculator tape paired with an exasperated person attempting to make sense of such a difficult proposition. More than 50 years ago, financial aid didn’t exist and students who had dreams of going to college and who did not have the financial means had to defer their dreams in search of a practical application. Now, a simple search for scholarship information will return so many possibilities!

In 1965, the University of Texas at San Marcos was the sight of the first sign of change in the college landscape. President Lyndon B. Johnson was on campus to add to his growing legacy which is today known as “The Great Society.” President Johnson signed the Higher Education Act of 1965 at that college, and this bill forever changed the nature of how college operates and how the federal government helps students who have the dream of going to college but lack the financial means to pursue those dreams.

There are many parts of the Higher Education Act of 1965 aimed at changing how colleges operate. Probably the most well-known is Title IX which requires colleges to spend equal monies on genders. Title IV is the area of legislation where most college students are affected. Title IV directly regulates the system of financial aid that exists within the United States of America.

The first step to obtaining financial aid is to fill out the cumbersome form known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA requires a student and their family to disclose all financial information as the government assumes that the student’s family will help pay part of the cost. It is important that students understand they must return the FAFSA quickly as federal student aid is distributed on a first come – first serve basis. Along with detailed information on government grants, the FAFSA is the place to start.

The most prominent of the federal student aid program may be the Pell Grant. This grant was named for Senator Clayton Pell. The idea of the Pell Grant is to lower the cost of college by providing students in great financial need with money that is under no obligation to be repaid to the federal government. The Pell Grant will not cover the entire cost of college, but can defray a great portion of it.

The Stafford loan is the most prominent loan program encompassed in the financial aid system within the United States of America. These are low-interest loans that are backed in full faith by the federal government. Stafford loans do not have to be paid back until six months after the student’s last enrollment in a full time class load.

The Federal Work-Study program allows students to obtain jobs on campus for the purpose of helping pay for college expenses. Federal Work-Study requires colleges to set aside jobs every year for qualified students and to pay those students at least the federal minimum wage.

College may seem awfully difficult to pay for, but thanks to President Johnson there is some help out there for students as they attend traditional and online course programs. College is more of a level playing field in socio-economic circles thanks to this important legislation and college grant and scholarship opportunities are a huge factor.

Grants aren’t only provided to help students pay for college studies. In higher education, at least, colleges and universities often expand their offerings with the help of grants. This year alone, public and private institutions have been provided grants worth millions of dollars. They plan to spend the grant money they’ve received on everything from summer student scholarships to statewide education initiatives.

In Missouri, a university is putting nearly $6 million in grants that it received into healthcare and dentistry education. The grants, provided to the Kirksville-based institution by the Health Resources and Services Administration are going to benefit its Arizona facilities as well. According to an announcement from that college, the institution plans to apply some of the grant money to a new family and community medicine department at its School of Osteopathic Medicine as well as a workforce development initiative at its School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Be sure to learn more about online grant.

In Kirksville, the money is to benefit instruction and more at that institution’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and a workforce development initiative at the college’s School of Health Management. The university plans to put additional Health Resources and Services Administration grant money toward classroom resources and technology. The Health Resources and Services and Services Administration is a US Department of Health and Human Services agency.

A university in Tempe, Arizona, on the other hand, received a $43.4 million US Department of Education grant designed to help a statewide education initiative. This Teacher Incentive Fund Grant has been provided to the university’s teachers college as part of school reform within the state. With the Arizona Department of Education and a statewide schools network known as the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, this college is leading a project designed to enhance student achievement, keep educators who are exceptionally effective and more. The project, known as the Arizona Ready-for-Rigor Project, includes a pay system for teachers that’s based on performance.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer provided another $1 million in grant money to that university. This grant money is to be used to help area businesses with new and existing entrepreneurial ventures, the college announcement noted. The institution intends to apply the money to what it refers to as a Venture Catalyst program that, based at its Scottsdale Innovation Center, would include group training and mentoring.

A business program at an Illinois university is also benefiting from grant money – this one for $188,000. The US Department of Education is providing the Lisle-based college with the Title VI Business and International Education Program Grant over a period of two years, according to an announcement from the institution. The college plans to provide international training to area businesses through an interactive web portal and, through scholarships, help students participate in travel abroad programs.

It’s all about the arts as far as an $80,000 grant to a university in Boston is concerned. This grant, the largest provided to the institution by the National Endowment for the Arts, is to help pay artists-in-residence salaries and student scholarships for an institute at that college. During summers, gifted high school musicians receive training at the institute. Be sure to read more about educational scholarships.

Even when school grants such as these aren’t provided directly to students, the money often helps them in one way or another. Some of the grants extended to colleges and universities this year might even help area businesses help the economy. Find out which course online is right for you.
